Air Safety: What's that light in the sky over there? ATC can't identify it. Can you?

Hi Reader,

Safety in the Skies

Ryan Graves began his career in maritime aviation, training extensively to operate the F/A-18 Super Hornet in challenging conditions over open oceans. He flew from carriers including the USS Theodore Roosevelt, honing his skills in formation flying, night operations, aerial refuelling, and complex manoeuvres that required precision and clear judgement.

His responsibilities included safeguarding restricted airspace, coordinating with other pilots, and maintaining a high standard of safety and reliability during each mission.

In about 2012/2015, after the radar systems in their aircraft were upgraded, the radar began to pick up anomalous objects in their airspace. At first they put this down to software glitches in the new systems but after rigorous checks the objects remained on the screens.

He and his fellow pilots would investigate these objects. On one occasion, they described seeing what appeared to be a cube set inside a clear, translucent sphere, observed at altitudes and in conditions where ordinary aircraft would struggle.

These objects seemed to remain stationary against headwinds or glide fluidly in ways that no conventional propulsion system could manage, raising questions about their origin and purpose.

Subsequently, the now famous 'Gimbal' and 'GoFast' video clips appeared in the public domain.

Grave has since launched “Americans for Safe Aerospace,” a platform aiming to encourage robust data collection, consistent reporting standards, and transparent public discourse about unidentified aerial objects witnessed by qualified pilots.

In July 2023, Graves testified under oath to a bipartisan Congressional hearing about his experiences.

So what? We're talking UFOs now?

You are aviators. You may be a low hours student or a veteran of many logbooks. As such you know how to recognise what's flying in the airspace around you.

The point of telling Graves' story is to highlight the fact that pilots do see strange and anomalous phenomena in the skies.

In the past few weeks, pilots and air traffic controllers have witnessed lights in the sky in airspace in multiple US states, the UK, Germany, and elsewhere.

People are talking about them as if they're all drones but as the eye witnesses have pointed out, the drones are only half the story.

The story is unfolding as I write and so far there have been no satisfactory explanations.

All we can say with any certainty is that:

  • The objects are under intelligent control
  • They have appeared in multiple locations and countries
  • The authorities seem unable to prevent airspace incursions
  • They've been seen by pilots and passengers in the air
  • They've been seen by thousands of witnesses on the ground

In the meantime, thank you for you all your participation in the Facebook group during 2024. I wish you and your families a Merry Christmas / Happy Solstice / Seasons Greetings and I hope 2025 is a year of peace, prosperity, and joy for you.

It's certainly going to be interesting!

Kind Regards,
Ben

Store | Group | Advertising Hi Reader, Recent developments from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have introduced new regulations that will significantly impact the safety of light aircraft operations. As of 1st January 2025, certain piston-engined light aircraft are required to carry active carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. This measure aims to protect passengers who may not be aware of the risks associated with carbon monoxide exposure, a colorless and odorless gas that can seep into the...
