Flight Training News

  • Airman Certification Standards (ACS) Updates: The FAA recently revised its ACS to streamline content for private pilot exams. These updates clarify test elements like electronic flight bags (EFBs) and passenger management during emergencies, while also refining weather-related training materials and proficiency checks.
  • Jeppesen's Updated Training Resources: Jeppesen has introduced new textbooks for private pilots, with a focus on competency-based training and modern learning tools. The updated materials include sections on energy management and next-generation flight operations, making it easier for students to grasp complex concepts.
  • Flight Training Scholarships: AOPA has opened applications for its 2024-2025 scholarships, which offer between $2,500 and $14,000 to help aspiring pilots cover training costs. The program particularly supports high school students and teachers involved in aviation, helping expand access to flight training.
  • Challenging Exam Questions: In August 2024, a review of commonly missed questions on private pilot exams highlighted topics like high-density altitude takeoffs and complex flight planning, stressing the importance of understanding nuanced FAA regulations.

What's the best aircraft for beginners?

When choosing the best aircraft for a student pilot, there’s a lot to consider beyond just the aircraft’s reputation. While many have heard of the classic Cessna 172 or Piper Cherokee, it’s important to think about your own training goals, flight environment, and budget.

Here are a few beginner-friendly aircraft that have earned their place in the training world:

  1. Cessna 172 Skyhawk
Often called the “most popular trainer in the world,” the Cessna 172 is known for its forgiving handling, reliable performance, and high-wing design, which provides great visibility for students. With its reputation for stability and ease of control, it’s hard to go wrong with this one.
  2. Piper PA-28 Cherokee
The low-wing counterpart to the 172, the Piper Cherokee family (including models like the Warrior and Archer) is well-loved for its solid feel in the air. Many pilots say it’s more responsive than the Cessna, making it a favorite among those looking to get a feel for lower-wing designs.
  3. Diamond DA20/DA40
For those interested in more modern aircraft, the Diamond DA20 or DA40 are sleek, composite designs known for their excellent visibility and fuel efficiency. They’re great for students who are already looking forward to more complex systems, with Garmin G1000 glass cockpits in some models.
  4. Tecnam P2002/P92
A European contender in the training market, Tecnam’s light sport aircraft (LSA) like the P2002 are perfect for those who may be aiming at a sport pilot certificate. They are light, easy to handle, and have lower operating costs, but might lack the “heavier” feel of aircraft like the Cessna or Piper.

Training goals: Are you aiming for a sport, private, or commercial pilot license? Your choice of aircraft might change as your goals evolve.

Flight environment: Will you train at a busy towered airport, or at a smaller field? Some aircraft perform better in different conditions.

Maintenance and availability: Some aircraft, while great on paper, may have limited parts availability or require specialized maintenance, driving up costs.

For current and former student pilots: What did you train on, and what did you love (or hate) about it?

For the instructors: What do you recommend to new students, and why?

Store | Group | Advertising Hi Reader, Recent developments from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have introduced new regulations that will significantly impact the safety of light aircraft operations. As of 1st January 2025, certain piston-engined light aircraft are required to carry active carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. This measure aims to protect passengers who may not be aware of the risks associated with carbon monoxide exposure, a colorless and odorless gas that can seep into the...
