One Classroom Visit Changed a Pilot's Life Forever

Hi Reader,

Some weeks the biggest aviation story has nothing to do with aircraft orders or regulatory filings. Sometimes it is about a conversation. One conversation, in the right room, at the right time. That is where we are starting this week. Pull up a chair.

Pilot Institute Airplane Courses

Their pilot training school will help you achieve your airplane flying dreams. Getting a pilot license is not easy, but it’s easier than ever before with their free and paid online classes

One Classroom Visit. One Career.

In the late 1980s, a young fighter pilot walked into a school in rural Indiana. He was not there to recruit anyone. He simply talked to students about flying, about service, about what a life in aviation could look like.

Nobody in that room knew what had just happened. Not the teacher. Not the students. Not even the pilot.

Decades later, that pilot, now retired Brigadier General Dave Brubaker, received an email from a serving military aviator. The man wanted to say thank you. He remembered that classroom visit. He said it had sparked something that never went away. That student went on to become a Colonel in the United States Air Force and a B-1 Bomber pilot.

One visit. One conversation. A lifetime of flying.

Brubaker now volunteers with STEM Flights, a U.S. organisation where more than 500 pilots donate their time visiting schools, hosting airport tours, and giving first flights to young people who have never been inside a small aeroplane. Most of these pilots will never hear what happened next. But those stories are happening quietly, every single day.

There is something in this for all of us. You do not need to be a retired general. You do not need a turbine rating. If you fly, or if you are learning to fly, you already have something most people never will: a story worth telling. And you never know who is listening.

Cirrus Launches Free Simulator Training for SR Series Owners

Cirrus has rolled out Mission Ready Simulator Sessions, a complimentary year-long programme for SR20 and SR22 owners. The programme delivers 24 scenario-based simulator sessions, released twice a month, at participating Cirrus Training Centers across the U.S. Each session is built around real-world mission profiles and includes realistic ATC communications. Owners can complete up to 12 sessions per year. It is a smart move from Cirrus and a reminder that proficiency does not maintain itself.

Starlink Pricing Row Rumbles On

The fallout from Starlink's March decision to cap standard roaming plans at 100 mph continues to frustrate GA pilots worldwide. The move effectively pushed anyone flying faster than 87 knots into new aviation-specific tiers starting at $250 per month, up from as little as $50. AOPA and IAOPA wrote directly to Elon Musk in March, and a Change.org petition gathered over 4,000 signatures. Many pilots had already invested in Starlink Mini hardware expecting affordable in-flight connectivity. So far, SpaceX has not budged.

Air Tractor Acquires Thrush Aircraft

Air Tractor completed its acquisition of Thrush Aircraft on 3 April, bringing two of the biggest names in aerial application under one roof. Both brands will continue to operate independently, with existing Thrush leadership staying in place. Air Tractor CEO Jim Hirsch said the deal is about long-term support and production capacity. It is a consolidation story, but for the agricultural aviation world it is a significant one.

FAA Launches Advanced Air Mobility Pilot Programme

The FAA has established the Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Integration Pilot Program, known as eIPP, a national effort to accelerate the safe integration of eVTOL aircraft into the National Airspace System. The programme follows an executive order directing federal agencies to speed up deployment of emerging aviation technologies. Whether you are excited or sceptical about air taxis, this is the regulatory machinery starting to move.

Bell 505 Operators Face Fresh Airworthiness Directive

The FAA has formalised an emergency airworthiness directive for certain Bell 505 helicopters, requiring operators to prohibit the use of ballast weights in the aft movable ballast box assembly. The issue centres on a hinge fault that could allow weights to escape and strike the tail rotor. The AD, originally issued as an emergency measure in March, becomes formally effective on 16 April for any operators who did not receive direct notice.

Finally, there is a moment in every student pilot's journey where you realise nobody else can do this for you. Your instructor can brief you. Your friends can encourage you. But when you line up on the centreline, it is just you and the aeroplane. That is not a burden. That is the whole point. Every pilot who ever flew started exactly where you are now. Keep showing up.

That is it for this week. If you have a story about someone who inspired you to fly, we would love to hear it in the Student Pilot Community group on Facebook. See you next Friday.

Blue skies,
Ben

Student Pilot Community Training At All Flight Levels Pilot Institute | Rod Machado | Pilot Store | Advertising | Skool Community Hi Reader, This week the calendar took a hit. RIAT, the biggest weekend in the British aviation year, has been pulled from the 2026 diary. There is more going on too, including the strongest start to a year UK aviation has ever recorded, and a story about the Spitfire that sounds like fiction but is not. For the first time in a generation, RAF Fairford will be...

Student Pilot Community Training At All Flight Levels Pilot Institute | Rod Machado | Pilot Store | Advertising | Skool Community Hi Reader, There is a question that comes up in briefing rooms and flying club bars in equal measure: does a student pilot really need to learn the old ways? Steam gauges, the whiz wheel, dead reckoning with a pencil and a paper chart. When a Garmin G1000 can do it all in a glance, why bother? The honest answer is more interesting than either side usually admits....
